Moods (An Ode to Coffee and Grey Days)

Matt and Kim live a couple of blocks south of Moods Coffee Corner, a recently opened shop located at Lindengracht and Tichelstraat. Moods is quaint and convenient, sporting an extensive menu and some of the best prices in the city, with plans to extend their food menu over the next few months. The young people on staff will scramble to make sure your coffee is perfect. I recommend the Americano and pain au chocolat.

I can’t function without a coffee in the morning. After years of not having a coffee maker in the house, it’s now as necessary as a toothbrush. The Dutch typically serve their coffee as shots of espresso, best savoured.

I’ll have more to say on cafés. It poured rain on the city yesterday, sheets of water walloping the windows, clouds that turned the sky black, lending the apartment a whole new comfortable feeling that brought sleep on early. On the television, a Discovery Channel show is detailing storms taking place on planetary surfaces infinite distances away, 600-kilometre-per-hour winds churning impossibly, the unleashing of an anger that no human will ever experience directly. I’m glad to be inside.
